An award was presented to Citizens for a Scenic Wisconsin by Scenic America for steady and successful opposition to two legislative bills that would have allowed roadside billboards to become more invasive in Wisconsin. David Berkley , communications director of national scenic advocacy organization Scenic America, presented the award to the CSW board of directors at their July 18 meeting in Appleton. The bills would have allowed more trees to be cut down on the highway right-of-way for better visibility of billboards, and facilitated re-installation of billboards – that were taken down because they were in the way of highway reconstruction – elsewhere in the municipality. The bills passed the state legislature but were vetoed by Governor Evers in May, at the end of the legislative session. Gary Goyke, CSW president, who had been in communication with the governor’s office about the bills, thanked Berkley for the award.
